Can a Client Steal Your Framework? Here’s How to Prevent It

If you’ve built a process, method, or signature framework—something that’s gotten real results for clients—you’ve created intellectual property. And yes, it’s valuable. And yes, someone could try to reuse it without credit or permission.

Let’s talk about how to prevent that from happening.

Step 1: Use a Strong Consulting Agreement

Your contract should include an intellectual property clause that makes it very clear what content, methods, and materials you retain ownership of—even after the work is done.

Step 2: Add an NDA Early in the Conversation

If you’re in the early stages of pitching, exploring a collaboration, or discussing strategy, have the other party sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement before you share your process.

Step 3: Clearly Communicate Boundaries

Sometimes people “borrow” because they genuinely don’t know better. Reinforce what’s yours and how it can (or can’t) be used, both in writing and in conversation.

Step 4: Trust Your Contract

You don’t have to sound like a lawyer or lead with fear. You just need contracts that back you up, so if a line is ever crossed, you have options.

Your framework is part of your brand. You spent time creating it, refining it, testing it. Protect it like the asset it is.
