The 3 Templates Every Consultant Needs on Day One
If you’re starting your consulting business, let’s be honest: the legal stuff probably isn’t the first thing on your mind.
But here’s the truth—having clear, solid contracts from day one isn’t just about “being official.” It’s about protecting your time, your income, and your brain (a.k.a. your intellectual property).
Here are the three essential templates I recommend every consultant have ready before they send their first invoice:
1. Consulting Services Agreement
This is your foundational contract. It outlines the services you’re providing, payment structure, deadlines, cancellation terms, and—maybe most importantly—intellectual property ownership. It’s how you set expectations and prevent scope creep before it starts.
2. Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)
Even in early conversations, you might share proprietary ideas, frameworks, or client strategies. An NDA ensures those ideas stay protected and that collaborators or clients can’t share or reuse what’s yours without permission.
3. Independent Contractor Agreement
Whether you’re the contractor or hiring one, this agreement defines the working relationship, sets boundaries, and protects both sides. It’s especially helpful if you’re outsourcing work or collaborating with other service providers.
The bottom line? These three documents give you confidence, protect your business, and help you show up like the professional you are—whether it’s your first month or your fifth year.
